Shura Kei
Unarmed Self Defence & Fighting – BOXING & GRAPPLING
Our training in the BIFF Escrima System is emphasized on the use of weapons with whom you can strike, block, cut, stab or hit in any way. This doesn’t mean that Escrima is only a weapon based Fighting System, but the student will learn the basics with the stick, then evolves to working with Blades and knives and to apply these basics in unarmed combat.
But because I also have 25 years of experience in the Martial Art of Ju Jitsu and I have been learning or training in many other different Martial Systems (such as Karate, Judo, Aikido, Panantukan, BIFF Chinese Boxing, Sikaran, Grappling, …) I also might teach some “non Filipino” techniques during class. My unarmed Fighting is actually a mixture of all the Arts I have studied, but over the past years I have altered the way of executing and using the “non Filipino” techniques in a more “Filipino” way.
Also the senior students, have their own experiences, wether it is in the BIFF Escrima system or in any other Martial System. They are having their own interpretations and will bring this into the class.
Whenever we are training unarmed Fighting we do it with the same spirit as we train with weapons; as realistic as possible with maximum respect for your training partner.
I have named this way of unarmed Fighting “SHURA KEI”
“Shura Kei” are Japanese words, which can be translated in the English words “Fighting System”.
Shura Kei is not a martial art, it is not another martial style, it has no syllabus, no grades, belts or uniform. There are no limitations in the use of techniques from any martial art, system or origin. It is merely a supplement to the Escrima Syllabus.
Shura Kei is a way of training as close as possible to a real street fight, using everything that works to survive an attack.
Wise words from a wise fighter (late Bruce Lee) are “Using no way as a way”.
Shura Kei has only one rule, which is very important “RESPECT for your training partner”!!!
You still want to have a friendly beer after practise with each other!!!
The idea behind “Shura Kei” is founded by Tim, as a personal expression of his way of unarmed fighting, but is not owned by Tim. This means that all students and group members of the Belgian BIFF Fighters Club can share his/her insights in methods of fighting.
